Energy in Focus - Scenario and Perspectives of the Power Sector in Brazil
Romeu Rufino, Director-General of the Brazilian Electricity Regulatory Agency (Aneel), delivered the lecture “Scenario and Perspectives of the Power Sector in Brazil”, yesterday (08/27) at Getúlio Vargas Foundation, as part of the lectures program Energy in Focus held once a month by FGV Energia.
Rufino emphasized how important Aneel is to regulate and oversee the electricity sector. “The Agency has also a mediator role focused on solving conflicts among the different sector agents, and also acts authorizing grants.”
Aneel’s Director-General emphasized that the hydrological sector is much more favorable for 2016 than the one expected for 2014 and 2015. According to Rufino, the power rates should be reduced in the next year as more rains are expected, as well as the shutting down of some thermal plants and the renewal of power plants concessions, which was emphasized by him as one of the main current challenges for the sector.
“The rate level observed in 2014 and 2015 came to its tolerable limit. Consumers may take a breath, and I believe the rate will be reduced for the next year,” considered.
According to lecture’s data, 67% of the power generated in Brazil comes from power plants. “Therefore, we have the obligation of not wasting water in the current scenario of scarcity. This is important also for consumers to use power in a more conscious way,” highlighted Rufino, also pointing to the growth of other power generation sources in the country, such as wind and solar.
